Building Dynamic Boards: The Human Factor
There’s no shortage of tools available to help nonprofit boards operate efficiently - job descriptions, onboarding processes, meeting agendas, performance assessments, and more. At The Nonprofit Strategy Group, we champion these practices. They bring structure, clarity, and accountability to board service.
But policies and procedures alone don’t build dynamic boards. Relationships do.
That’s the human factor.
The human factor is the web of relationships between board members and between the board and staff. When those relationships are strong, the board thrives. When they’re strained or neglected, even the best processes fall flat. Dysfunction in relationships derails engagement, collaboration, and progress.
So how do you strengthen the human factor?
1. Create Space for Connection
Boards function better when members know and trust one another. Take time to learn not just where someone works, but why they’re drawn to your mission. What inspired them to join? What values do they hold? This kind of personal connection builds empathy and understanding.
2. Share Hopes and Ideas
Every board member has a vision for the organization, yet these are rarely shared. Intentional conversations about goals, priorities, and aspirations help create shared direction. This doesn’t just align people, it energizes them.
3. Recognize Strengths
Not every board member brings the same strengths, and that’s a good thing. By naming what each person does well and how they want to contribute, boards can become more strategic, collaborative, and supportive. It also helps ensure members feel valued and engaged.
4. Foster a Culture of Positivity and Progress
Boards often spend more time on what’s going wrong than on what’s going right. Shifting to a strengths-based culture; one that acknowledges accomplishments, welcomes new ideas, and embraces change, builds momentum. And momentum builds impact.
These relationship-based strategies don’t replace good governance practices; they enhance them. Yet, because they require time and intention, they’re often put off or overlooked.
That’s where we come in.
At The Nonprofit Strategy Group, we help boards build the structure and the culture they need to be effective. Our retreat facilitation services are designed to prioritize both the strategic and the human, so your board doesn’t just run well, it thrives.
